Hints for successful newborn diapering
Newborns don't move much. Because they aren't wiggling as you change diapers, you should have time to get used to what you are doing. Take advantage of this stage! Newborn diapering doesn't take nearly as much energy as chasing down and diapering a busy toddler.
Diaper time is a great time to look directly into your baby's alert face. You probably get a lot of time to gaze at your sleeping newborn. While diapering, though, your baby is more likely to be looking back, listening intently to the sound of your voice. A happy baby is much easier to diaper than a screaming baby.
Newborns can be more sensitive. Sharp noises (like hook-and-loop fasteners), bright lights, and even extreme cold can startle your newborn baby. Pop snaps gently with a fingernail between the snap parts on the diaper. Keep the lights low, and keep your cloth wipes in a wipes warmer. When diaper time is calm and even, baby is more likely to look forward to that time together.
Wipes solution isn't necessary. Some babies get rashes from the chemicals in commercial wipes solution. Some react even to natural, essential oils. Just a bit of warm water should clean up most jobs nicely. A drop of mild liquid soap in the solution may help for bigger messes.
Newborn poop is quite loose. To prevent leaks and messes, be careful to get a snug fit with the diaper. Fuzzi Bunz snaps allow you to adjust waist and legs separately. For newborns with very skinny legs, Extra Small newborn diapers may work better. For chubby legs, try Small diapers.

When you are looking for saving in your cloth diaper budget, you need to either buy fewer diapers or buy diapers for less. We have a few suggestions for each approach.
- Buy fewer newborn diapers. Wash more often, and you will need fewer diapers. Buy quality diapers, which last longer. Follow diaper care instructions to keep the diapers in great shape longer. You may find that you can use the diapers for more than one child.
- Buy newborn diapers for less. Buy bulk, diaper packages, clearance, and second quality diapers for great savings.
