How many diapers to buy for a newborn?

When you are buying newborn diapers, start with just a couple of very basic questions: what size and how many.

• What size diapers should you get? If the baby is already here, decide on size by weight and leg measurement. Extra Small are best for the smallest babies, 4-12 lbs and leg just 4-6" around the fullest part at the top of the thigh. A bigger newborn baby, 7 lbs+, can start with Small pocket diapers. If the baby isn't born yet, you may want to have a few of each size on hand.

• How many diapers do you need? The number of diapers to buy is a simple question of math. A newborn baby will need about 10-12 diaper changes a day. You should change the diaper whenever wet or soiled. Ask yourself how often you want to wash diapers. If you wash everyday, you may only need 15-18 newborn diapers. If you wash every other day, buy 24-30 diapers. This formula will help you decide how many diapers to buy for a newborn.
