Diaper cakes are easy to match to a themed party. A colorful stack of reusable cloth diapers as a baby shower centerpiece is sure to be the biggest topic of conversation.
Your cake can have one to three tiers, depending on how many diapers you would like to include with your gift. Put small diapers on the top, medium in the center, and large on the bottom. Diaper Cake Ingredients
- 12-24 diapers of each size. More diapers make a wider cake.
- Wide ribbon, 1-2" wide to wrap around each tier. About 10-15 feet.
- Narrow ribbon, 1/4" wide to wrap around each diaper. About 70-80 feet -- 1 foot of ribbon for each diaper and bundle of inserts.
- 2 new large rubber bands per tier
- 30-60 new small rubber bands -- one for each diaper and bundle of inserts.
- Large bottle -- at least 10-12" tall, a round bottle of baby shampoo works well.
- Platter, 12 - 20" depending on the number of diapers you will use and which size you will use for the bottom tier. This needs to be sturdy enough to support the whole diaper cake. Metal, plastic, or cardboard will work.
- 2-4 dowels (optional). About 15" tall for a two-layer diaper cake or about 20" for a three-layer cake.
- Decorations. Garnish with socks, T-shirts, bibs, diaper cream, thermometer, baby hair brush, wash cloths, receiving blankets, or toys. Shower the baby with useful items.
Diaper Cake Instructions
Learning how to make a diaper cake is so easy! Follow 5 simple steps.
- Roll up the diapers. Roll each diaper starting at the top, the open end. Roll it tight, like a sleeping bag. Wrap a small rubber band around each diaper, then wrap with narrow ribbon and tie a bow.
- Roll up the inserts. Roll 2-3 inserts together as you did the diapers. Wrap with a rubber band and a bow.
- Bundle the tiers. Bundle all of the diapers of each size together, arranging the colors and the white inserts as you like around the edge. You can vary the number of inserts used to adjust the size of each tier. Build the bottom tier around the large bottle to make the largest tier a stable base. Wrap 2 large rubber bands around each bundle, then wrap the wide ribbon around the whole tier and tie big a bow.
- Decorate. Tuck the decorations into the tiers, tie them on with ribbon. This is the place to really make the diaper cake match the theme of the baby shower.
- Assemble. Then, pile up the tiers. It may work best to assemble each tier, transport them separately, then stack them and drape with ribbon when you arrive at the baby shower. You can also add dowels to hold the tiers together more steadily.
There you go! A beautiful diaper cake is finished and ready for a great baby shower.
